"I'm not one to spend. How did I get here?" This phrase is common. The answer lies in Indebted Grandma Syndrome.
What is the Syndrome
The "grandma" represents the generous part that:
- Lends money to relatives without charging
- Subscribes to streaming services for her nephew
- Pays a friend's bill because "she's in trouble"
- Can't say "no"
Result: in debt for financing other people's lives.
The Psychological Root
- Fear of rejection: "If I don't help, no one likes me."
- Inherited guilt: "Family helps family" without limits.
- Love-money confusion: Spending = proving love.
The Cure
"I can't right now. I'm reorganizing my finances."
It's not selfish. It's survival. You can't save anyone by sinking your own boat.
🧠 Reflection: List 3 people you've funded in the last 6 months. How much came out of your pocket? And how much did you invest in yourself?
